Day 62 - Saturday, July, 24

When you are so tired and feel like you need to lay down at 6 PM to rest and then fall asleep for the night you know you had a tough day! At least when we woke up at 3 AM we were able to rationalize that we shouldn’t be tired since we got 9 hours sleep…

After coffee and yogurt we faced one of the scariest scenarios since the tick nightmare where we had hundreds all over the place. We parked the the rig, recently name “US Doggie Style” on a lake which was very pretty except for the gazillion geese all over the place. Which meant there was goose crap everywhere. Which finally translates to when you are ready to roll at 4am and want to pull in all the equipment from outdoors and requires us to get on the ground to get under the RV we are literally lying in the crap…

Out on the plains - elevation now 1,600 feet I ran into Neil who is a farmer in the area. Big smile and great disposition we chatted on the road about life. Appreciate his talking to us in today’s interview and I loved the activity that made him happy…I’d be surprised if you’ve ever heard this one!

Big story of the day was finishing up in the town of Sedan. Not really a town as much as a loading station that reminds me of one of the outer planets in Star Wars, Towering silos, railroad tracks coming in to load, big trucks coming in and out kicking up a constant stream of dust. Google maps sent me on a road that didn’t exist and I ended up following the railroad tracks for over a mile until a train kicked up next to me and we both kept pace coming into the terminal. I saw Chris parked in an abandoned house’s driveway. As usual, I thought I would ask if we could stay there even though this was a high traffic, dusty and loud area. I saw a nondescript shed off to the side and walked over. A white van was parked next to a wooden step surrounded by gravel. I noticed a keypad on the door and nothing else - no mention of a company name. I knocked and waited. Then I decided to open the door to see if anyone was in. I opened the door and 2 men in their thirties, clean, fitted tshirts and jeans were there. I looked at the one sitting down who could have been Italian and in front of him were pills, scales, containers and I briefly glanced at the other man to my left as he was moving around the back of this small office with equipment. Breaking Bad was the only thing I could think of as what was happening. Now a guy coming in with a cowboy hat, running vest, sweaty might elicit a question about where I’m coming from typically but in this case the guy stood up very surprised and started walking towards me telling me I shouldn’t be here and as he is coming at me the other guy starts moving towards me as well. Without breaking eye contact I back up out of the door as the guy came towards me and I told him I’m just running through town and was looking for place to park, thanked him and closed the door before anything else happened. If i was tired after 33 miles, the fatigue was gone and I ran the 1/4 mile to Chris, jumped in the rig and told him we needed to leave asap!

We decided to drive back to the last town we visited, Davenport to boon-dock up for the night. Wow, this was scary and both Chris and I were unsettled. Nothing a good meal couldn’t take care of…

All for today - thank you for the ongoing support.

Cheers,

David.
