After 3 months of living on the road in tight quarters, you would think a real bed, shower and the relief of the regimented routine might be welcome. On the contrary, I am uncomfortable in the comfort and missing the daily missions.
The Run Across America is now 2,520 miles complete and “only” 861 miles left. I needed to rework the entire section from Utah to California as the RV is not equipped to go on the remote Pony Express Trail. As a result, we will be traveling on Route 50 and what Time called “The Loneliest Highway in The United States” from the outskirts of Salt Lake City to Carson City Nevada. There will be a stretch where there are no towns or services for 150 miles. We are ready for the challenge.
We are also scheduled to go over the pass out of Carson City into Lake Tahoe and then Placerville. Both areas are dealing with major wildfires - The Tahoe 200 just being cancelled and a cousin has been ordered to evacuate twice already. Salt Lake City is under a cloud of smoke so we will take it one day at a time and hope luck is with us.
We checked the RV into General RV in Salt Lake City. There is a lot of work to be done and hopefully the critical items will be completed by Wednesday morning when we plan to resume.
Finally, on this off day, I reflect on what has made this trip so special and successful - simply, the support from my friends and family. You have all played such a big part of overcoming whatever obstacles get in the way. You have all made each step into something that is meaningful and when there was heartbreak, there were open arms to fall back on. I thank you all for anything and everything you have done to make this trip so memorable.
Cheers,
David.
