Day 4 - Thursday, March 25
Day 4 Stats: weight=165.6 (same as yesterday, -3.4 since start), 27 miles run, 130 total miles run, feel 7 of 10. Kicked off an early day at 6am worried about the forecasted 4 day heat wave and temps 90+ degrees. Nothing saps you worse than heat so this will be critical test. The day started with my first obstacle around mile 6 where a train was literally parked with no urgency to move. While the RR crossing lights are going cars are back up taking detours. On foot, i decided to hop a train car and the train didn’t move! On the other side of the tracks i ran into a shack with line to the pickup window called Honey Buns Cafe. Asked a man at the window how they tasted and he told me best he’s had so i went in. Small place, man behind grill, Cindy the owner working the kitchen and 2 other women at register. They ask me where I’m running to and i tell them Alma. They say you know that’s 30 miles away and i tell them its only a drop in the bucket to where I’m going. While i eat maybe the best honey bun I’ve had in my life i share the RAAm plan. We all took pictures and on my way out the girl came up to me and handed me a lunch bag and says this is from Cindy for your trip - she makes the best chicken salad. I almost started crying. I carried the chickens salad 11 miles until i was hungry again and found an old flatbed in an orchard and she was right, it was damn good chicken salad!
Shoes are toast - on to pair #2.
I was intent before the trip to do pushups everyday so i don’t become a scrawny man after this run. I haven’t had the energy to do 1 pushup. Until today that is, i did 25 after i had the chicken salad - maybe Cindy’s kindness gave me energy, maybe I’m getting acclimated to 30+ miles per day.
Alex and I get our second official visitor today, Amy is going to do race with Chris this weekend and she is stopping by on her way and then maybe again on her way back.
Another day of Lucky on ice, roads have no shoulder and a poor fox suffered the consequence along the route. Hopefully tomorrow we can get him back out.
All for now, cheers.
